‘There’s no place like home’ – are prisoners too comfy in jail?

Posted on 25 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

A member of the Prison Officers Association has revealed that inmates enjoy their jail time so much that if an escaping opportunity came up; they would rather ignore it.

Glyn Travis is a member of the association and explained how a drug dealer regularly used a ladder to enter cell windows at a Yorkshire prison, but none of the inmates used the ladder as a means of escape.

Shockingly, Travis also revealed the reasons why inmates are happy to stay in jail is because they have access to drugs, mobile phones and even sex.

Will tobacco companies go up in smoke?

Posted on 25 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

Tobacco companies face criticism as the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has accused them of unlawful practices.

Retailers such as Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons along with tobacco groups Imperial Tobacco and Gallaher are accused of arranging to swap future pricing information.

The OFT said in 2000 and 2003 similar understandings between tobacco companies limited the retailers’ ability “to determine its selling price independently”.

Is Obama’s love affair with the media over?

Posted on 24 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

obamaSome said it was too good to last and some were right. It seems that Obama’s love affair with the US media is over just proving that if you’ve got the media on your side, it won’t necessarily stay that way as The Bulletin points out.

It had been 10 days, an eternity on the election calendar, since Barack Obama held a press availability session with reporters traveling alongside him on the campaign trail. In the 10 days that passed, the Colombia Free Trade bill died, the price of oil continued to skyrocket, and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter met with Hamas.

With a number of key questions piling up, one NBC off-air reporter decided to approach the Illinois senator as he was having breakfast with Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. at a Scranton eatery and ask a question. As Mr. Obama sat in Glider Diner, the reporter sought a comment from him over Mr. Carter’s meeting with Hamas.

“Why can’t I just eat my waffle?” Mr. Obama retorted. The response ignited a firestorm of criticism and once again placed the presidential candidate under the microscope of the growing love/hate relationship he has with the press. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on 21 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

prescottDoes John Prescott’s admission that he suffered from bulimia while deputy prime minister deserve sympathy, suspicion or ridicule? The blame game…

Posted on 21 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

brownThe Times reports today that anybody who has seen Gordon Brown lose his temper does not easily forget it. The image of an angry bear springs to mind, except angry bears cannot usually get their hands on items of office equipment to fling around. The prime minister is said to be very angry at the media this weekend for creating a political storm in what he regards as a tax teacup. He is angry with the independent experts who have calculated that 5.3m families will lose out as a result of the abolition of the 10p income tax band…. Read the rest of this entry »

Police deny ‘massaging figures’ accusations

Posted on 18 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

Scotland YardThe Evening Standard newspaper has made accusations directed towards Scotland Yard that the police are ‘massaging’ their crime figures.

Scotland Yard has denied such accusations and insist that crime rates in London have indeed fallen.

Together with this accusation, the newspaper has also published details that local police stations are deliberately making it more difficult for people to report crimes.

An example is that people hoping to report mobile phone theft are told that unless they have the phone’s IMEI number there is nothing the police can do, which therefore discourages people from reporting such crimes.

Obama makes a potentially fatal faux pas

Posted on 18 April 2008 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

ObamaBarack Obama has so far given Hillary Clinton a run for her money in terms of the American presidential elections. That was until he said to fundraisers in San Francisco: “You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them it’s not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or antitrade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
