Looking Good!

TelevisionTop tips for dressing for television interviews

In our media training sessions we mentor people on how to survive television interviews – from awkward questions to handling the studio environment to the preparation and enforcement of key messages.

But the thing that many people will be most concerned about before stepping in front of the camera is how they look – and with good reason. We may all have been taught not to judge a book by its cover, but unfortunately this rarely happens. So in order to make a good impression during your next interview follow our top tips for what to wear – and more importantly what not to wear!

  1. Don’t wear white, black or red. White glows on-screen, black is too harsh and red ‘bleeds’ on camera. Blue is the safest colour to wear and pastel shades also work well.
  2. Don’t wear long, dangly earrings. All jewellery that moves or could make noise, distract the camera or hit the microphone should be removed before filming starts.
  3. Iron your clothes! Be wrinkle-free.
  4. Avoid stripes, checks, herringbone and other intricate patterns as these are difficult for the camera to pick up.
  5. Dress in a simple, conservative manner. You are not taking part in a fashion show! The interviewer will be interested in what you have to say and the camera will be focused on your face, not what you are wearing.
  6. Logos and brands (except those from your own companies) should not be visible on your clothing.
  7. Ladies, don’t wear short skirts!
