An electronics factory in East Kilbride is set to close and move to Poland, losing the jobs of 300 people.
Workers are said to be “stunned” by the news, and so far no-one from JVC has been available for comment.
Jim Farrely at the East Kilbride factory told the BBC “This is extremely disappointing for the workforce and loyal team there, and I’m very disappointed to hear that such a well-respected workforce is being treated in such a way.”
So far JVC haven’t done a good job of managing this crisis. Having made themselves ‘unavailable’ for comment has made them vulnerable in the eyes of the media.
Of course there is the chance that at the moment they are preparing their response to the media, but events such as this don’t just happen – there should have been public relations preparation.
Now their unwillingness to talk adds to annoyance at the fact that they have literally just abandoned 300 of their loyal employees. Not a good mix.
Media Mentor would suggest JVC release a statement as soon as possible. Obviously the content of the statement will be important too, and acknowledgment of the distress caused to their employees is essential.
At the moment the company look like the stereotypical corporation; making cut-throat decisions without keeping the considerations and thoughts of their employees in mind.
