Sarah Palin has certainly been a topical Vice Presidential candidate; if anything probably a little too topical.
Formerly Governor of Alaska, 44-year-old Palin has certainly enjoyed intense media coverage, and yet some might say she never seems to learn from her mistakes.
Palin’s latest botch up has been the alleged revelation that as part of the Republican presidential campaign spend, Palin has enjoyed $150,000 (£96,000) worth of new clothes.
Unsurprisingly, ethical campaigners in the US have been outraged by the shopping spree especially given the current state of America’s economic crisis. Oh dear.
Sarah’s initial response to the spending allegations: the clothes are on loan. The Republican Party’s revised response: all the clothes will go to charity after the election.
And what an absolute gem of a charity shop find it would be to discover Palin’s outfits bought from upmarket shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue.
Even more annoyingly for campaigners, it didn’t end there. According to Sky News Palin’s husband also reportedly enjoyed $5,000 worth of new clothes from an upmarket men’s shop.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand just how disastrous this is for Palin, and indeed the Republicans. It is understandable to try to present Palin as best as possible visually given that John McCain is hardly eye-candy, but understandably many cash-strapped Americans will see this is a slap in the face.
