Dignity Bercow, always dignity…

Posted on 24 June 2009 by pmurricane in Latest Media Training News

Will they never learn? Now that John Bercow has taken on the dignified mantel of the office of Speaker we should expect him to adopt a strange avuncular tone – rather stately, perhaps amused at the foolishness of mere MPs…shepherding his flock in a fatherly, unflappable way. But what do we see on ITV news? Asked a perfectly reasonable question by ITV political editor Tom Bradby “why do all conservatives hate you?” (Well it’s the question the public want answered) he lost his rag, and made the most basic mistake of all – he attacked the press. As if the press were asking awkward questions for the fun of it. Rather than, perfectly reasonably, holding public servants to public account. In this case a public servant who has just been elected on a ticket of making the Commons more publicly accountable. What he should have said was that he stands for root and branch reform, in order to restore public confidence in the Mother of all parliaments. It doesn’t matter who voted for him, the important thing is that he can now get on with the job. But he didn’t. He attacked ITV’s political editor. And they broadcast the Speaker losing control of his own emotions. Well that’s Day One out of the way, John. I thought it went rather well don’t you?
