Should Gordon Ramsay have published his emotional open letter to mother-in-law Greta Hutcheson? Will we think kindly of the Hell’s Kitchen star now we know that he has told the world his wife was in floods of tears over the rift with her parents? Our advice to the fiery Scot – No, and No. There is such a thing as bad publicity and this is it. Whether he was fully justified in defenestrating Chris Hutcheson we do not know, and have no opinion. It was a business decision, and business decisions are often hard. But with publicity the key to whether it is justified always lies in considering the audience. So – who is Gordon’s audience here? Investors? In which case they will want to see business decisions taken quietly, quickly, and with minimal collateral damage. 0/10 on that one. Customers? In which case they will want to see all Ramsay’s genius directed at delivering amazing culinary experiences in restaurants they can trust and want to say they’ve visited. 0/10 on that one. Family? Surveying the wreckage…er 0/10. For two decades Gordon Ramsay has personified excellence in dining out. He has also invented a new form of television entertainment which few have been able to match. Let’s hope that is still the description that immediately comes to mind in the years ahead.
