Jade Goody – should we be outraged or sympathetic?

Posted on 19 August 2008 by Sabina in Latest Media Training News

Jade GoodyJade Goody is many things: racist – perhaps, attention-seeking – almost definitely, a fraud – some journalists seem to think so.
When she was told on India’s version of Big Brother that she has cancer of the cervix the media asked her spokesman if it was a publicity stunt.
A tad harsh surely?

The grim reality for Goody however is that her public reputation has never been particularly good – and her recent appearance on India’s Big Brother seemed like a blatant publicity stunt worsened by the fact that she has now been on Big Brother three times.

Clearly her main reason for appearing on Big Brother in India was to remedy the fact that she was accused of being racist towards Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty, and there’s nothing like appearing on India’s Big Brother to make you seem anything but racist.

However, the news that she has been diagnosed with cancer has presumably come as a terrible shock for her and her family and this kind of press coverage should naturally be very sensitive.

The question is; can we blame the journalist mentioned on SkyNews for asking if this is a publicity stunt given Goody’s track record? Of course it is fair to say that even in the unlikely event that this is a publicity stunt her spokesman is hardly likely to admit that to the worlds press.
The main thing to remember here is the fact that the media never forgets and though it may seem incredibly harsh to ask whether her cancer diagnosis is a publicity stunt, there are several things to consider – one of which is the fact that it just so happened to be announced while she was in the Big Brother house.

Perhaps if Goody hadn’t started by conducting a major publicity stunt and going on India’s Big Brother show, journalists wouldn’t have been so quick to accuse her of such a thing.
