The death of Heath Ledger was widely covered in the world press, and for most people with a general knowledge of celebrity, his death was a real shock.
With celebrity drug-related deaths there is always an element of suspicion as to how the cause of death really came about. Take the death of Marilyn Monroe, there are still conspiracy theories circulating in the media over forty years after her death.
Shortly after Ledger’s death the media became relatively settled with the fact that he died of a sleeping-pill overdose – well that was until Mary-Kate Olsen declared she would answer no questions without a promise of immunity.
We may perhaps never know why Olsen has made such demands, and unfortunately that is a major part of the problem. She has now left herself very exposed to media speculation – if she has a PR advisor, frankly they should be fired.
Olsen has basically insinuated herself in Ledger’s death, something she clearly wouldn’t set out to achieve – and to make matters worse she has made no attempts to set the record straight. No comment, no statement, no interview – no nothing.
This really demonstrates the importance of looking-ahead and assessing how something will appear to the world’s press.
Mistakes such as this could be avoided altogether had Mary-Kate Olsen taken a second to sit back and think – how is this going to appear?
