So now we know. But for days before the budget speech, we were well softened up. Reminded frequently that every single man woman and child in Britain will share the pain. The lights will go out all over Britain, and we will not see them lit again until…the next boom.
Before the event, Michael Gove leaves the Cabinet meeting looking glumly at his shoes and stuttering through his sobs that it was “difficult”. We’re all doomed. But an hour later, we get the headline act. “Welcome to my comedy roadshow in my favourite chamber of them all …” Giddy Gideon, or George as he now likes to be called, rattled off a few one-liners, taking a poke at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, chortling at the idea of a nice pint of cider come the World Cup quarter finals.
One is reminded of the Dear Leader’s quip about the public sector union bosses “What planet is he on??!” In a tactic as old as time we have been softened up in the hope that we won’t see the bad news, as we desperately cling on to any point we can pretend is good. It‘s not subtle, but it’s effective. It’s worked before, as the dread footsteps of Headmaster Quelch approach the dorm, then pass inexplicably by. Cripes! Yarooh!!
