Hollywood actor Wesley Snipes has been sentenced to three years behind bars for tax evasion.
He was issued with the maximum sentence for dodging federal income taxes on earnings of £7 million from the peak of his career.
The actor was also convicted in February of three counts of failing to file tax returns from 1999 to 2001 but was acquitted of felony fraud and conspiracy charges.
Both of Snipes’ tax advisors, if you can call them that have been jailed too.
Could this be the beginning of celebrities of have broken the law, actually going to jail? Surely not!
Perhaps the Pete Doherty’s and Paris Hilton’s of the world will think twice about consciously breaking the law again.
This just goes to show however that there have been consequences for both of his advisors too. Clearly they weren’t great at pushing Snipes into paying his taxes though.
Celebrities beware; this could be the start of the criminal justice system actually putting you in prison for an extended amount of time. The media has never taken kindly to celebrities who seem to persistently break the law and get away with it; it’s sort of like a journalist’s form of payback.
Hollywood actors who choose to keep a low profile and live within the boundaries of the law tend to be left alone by the media. Do you often see stars like Reese Witherspoon, David Schwimmer and Evangeline Lily in Heat magazine?
No, and the reason why is because the media aren’t always unfair when it comes to stars who genuinely want to get on with their personal lives and leave their celebrity identity at work.
However, when news reader Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC realised the lead news story was about Paris Hilton she refused to read it and put the article in the shredder, proving journalists would rather report ‘real’ news as opposed to celebrity news.
Wesley Snipes hasn’t really had a rough time from the press over this incident because he has kept a relatively low profile; can you imagine if this was Britney Spears?
