Will it be All Right on the Night?

Posted on 13 January 2009 by Jo in Latest Media Training News

MadonnaSince Britain’s long-running blooper show ‘It’ll be All Right on the Night’ premiered in 1977, Denis Norden presented five episodes up to 1987, a further seven episodes between 1987 and 1997, and 11 between 1997 and now – a 120% increase. This shows just how easy it is to say the wrong thing at the worst time – on live T.V it is impossible to take your words back!

Our top three T.V bloopers include:

  1. Queen of Controversy Madonna created headlines for all the wrong reasons at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park in 2008. During the live broadcast, she called out to the family crowd: “Are you f**king ready, London?” The BBC was forced to apologise, claiming, “passions are running high and many celebrities are emotional.”
  2. In 1977, BBC Sports Commentator Harry Carpenter announced to everyone listening to his commentary on the Oxford and Cambridge boat race: “Ah, isn’t that nice? The wife of the Cambridge president is kissing the cox of the Oxford crew.”
  3. Weather presenter Joanne Malin hit the headlines when she described weather conditions the way the rest of us do – saying live on Central TV that it was “p*ssing it down.” Fortunately for Joanne viewers saw the funny side – the station received only two complaints and numerous other viewers contacted the station asking her editor not to be too hard on her.

Our media training can help you to prepare for television interviews and appearances. By establishing strong key messages and learning how to promote good news and delicately handle bad news it is possible to avoid these embarrassing and potentially career-threatening situations!
