After the invigorating and heart string-tugging whirlwind that was the democratic convention the McCain cavalry faced a political front line that required a coercive public opinion defeat. So what more of a newsworthy story to capture back the attention of the electorate that the announcement of the Republican’s new number two; Sarah Palin. But wait. Unfortunately for the anti-abortion republicans it emerges that the new vice president prospective has a young daughter…who is pregnant…and not married. As this news tore through the media of the world Palin and her troops conjured up a speech to gratify the American people.
And what did we think? Palin took off on a one woman show of power and resilience towards critics with a confident and well managed dismissal of the negative press surrounding her daughter. She flung open her family door introducing almost every member of her family and what they had achieved (one was almost expecting a shot of the family dog donning a pedigree rosette) embalmed in the tone of a proud mother daughter and aunt (sound familiar?). In the name of political enchantment Palin successfully put a nail of irrelevance in the ‘broken family’ coffin.
Basking in the volatile enthusiasm of the audience she portrayed herself as an all American fighter whilst talking fervently of her small town upbringing and her ‘hockey town mum’ background. If she played on American heritage anymore she would have had stars and stripes bursting out her ears.
The speech really hit home though, when she began her verbal assault on team Obama. There was absolutely no sign of any appeal towards winning the vote of the opposition as was observed in the democrat speeches and Palin proclaimed a brutal attack on all things Obama with a distinctive underpin of successful American history (though not one reference to George Bush). The feisty republican slammed the vast majority of Obama’s policies before working an unexpectedly fresh reverence to McCain’s prisoner of war history by comparing the similarity of characteristics required to withstand a cell and a presidential office, both of course as part of a crusade for America.
The speech was concluded when Mr McCain came to the stage to join his new recruit and her family but the question still hovers…is this enough to give McCain the public reinforcement that he needs? Did Palin deliver with enough force to conquer the presidential elections for the Republican Party? Sometimes even the weather forecasters can’t predict the skies that far ahead…
